This chronicle is Uncle Magnus’ legacy to his children and his siblings’ children - and generations to come.
Over the years Uncle Magnus has asked countless questions, collected photographs of people, places and memorabilia, and documented every last detail. He welded it all together with his remarkable memory of what had gone before. In essence, he became the ‘Keeper’ of his family’s stories.
Uncle Magnus’s first collection of the ‘van Ass’clan has been in the family for a number of years. It is mainly a fascinating account of the times 1890 - 1970 and the book has been accorded a special place in our family homes. A copy is safely ensconced in the Africana Section of the University of Stellenbosch.
It is now followed by this production named for his father, Pieter Johannes (Slim Pietertjie) Schietekat (1891-1972) which Uncle Magnus now shares with us, his readers. It is with gratitude and joy that we read and treasure our family history.
We are privileged to preface this amazing compilation of memories.
Thank you Uncle Magnus.
